World Honey Bee Day

World Honey Bee Day - photo of bee up close to a yellow flowerToday is World Honey Bee Day! Without bees, there would be no fruits or vegetables. Honey bees are truly a marvel of nature.

They produce that sweet golden honey that is PACKED FULL of nutrients. Honey is loaded with antioxidants, some of which have been found to lower the risk of stroke and heart attack. For example, there have been studies that are showing honey can help reduce your cholesterol. It can also be used topically to sooth burns, irritations and help speed up the healing of wounds.

It is believed that LOCAL honey can also help with allergies. To be truly local, honey needs to be derived from hives near your home. At Arcola Feed, our honey comes from hives between Rosharon and Angleton. The wax from hives is made to make candles, lip balms, and so much more.

Sadly, our bees are disappearing at an alarming rate. How can you help? Plant some of the bee’s favorites in your garden. Lavender, borage and marjoram are three favorites! Don’t have a garden? You can plant these in your flower beds or even in pots.

Celebrate World Honey Bee Day by adding some honey to your meal this evening. Honey on roasted pork, honey on a biscuit or toast, or add a little honey to your dessert. Use honey in your morning coffee instead of sugar for a healthier sweetener. In conclusion, add a little sweetness to your life and do your best to protect the bees!
