If you have chickens you may have noticed that your winter egg production has dropped off. If you are experiencing this, it is probably because of two things, molt and/or the shortening daylight hours.

Wondering what you can do about winter egg production? An option to consider is suppling a light to simulate springtime daylight hours.  Simply hang a light bulb in your barn, or chicken coop.  Put the bulb on a timer and set it to come on at 6 a.m. and turn off at 10 p.m. Please make sure to keep your blub light away from any flammable materials. You should be back in the egg business within a few weeks!

You can also opt to NOT do this. You will still get eggs, just not nearly as many as you get during the warmer months.
