Why are Egg Prices So High??

Why are Egg Prices So High??Why are Egg Prices So High?? I think one of most notable changes at the grocery store is the prices of eggs. I know the last time I went to the grocery store, a dozen of eggs costed around $5. WHICH IS INSANE!!! But why have eggs nearly doubled in cost in the last few months? Well the answer is inflation and Avian Influenza.

Egg Production:

About a year ago the US was hit with a devastation period of Avian Influenza. It especially hit egg producers hard. The nation saw a huge drop in laying hens within a six month span. Over 25 million hens were lost to the outbreak. Combine the loss of birds with the increasing feed cost and, as a result, you have a dozen of eggs that cost around $5.

Broiler and Commercial Poultry:

Aside from egg production, the Avian influenza outbreak also hit the broiler and commercial poultry industry. The USDA reported almost 58 million birds were lost from 46 states across the country. As Easter approaches, it is expected that egg prices will continue to increase. The hope is that we will seen it hit the peak of prices, as producers try to bring their flock numbers back up.

Start Your Own Flock:

A great way to get around the cost of eggs at the grocery store, is to start your own backyard flock. We have everything you need to get your flock started at Arcola Feed. We won’t be able to host chick day this year due to the Avian Flu. However we hope to start hatching out chicks and make those available to the public throughout the spring.
