Using Drones to Help with Feral Hog Populations
Using Drones to Help with Feral Hog Populations: Newly passed proposal. Anyone in Texas knows just how terrible wild hogs are and the sheer amount of destruction they can cause overnight. Over $2.5 billion dollars’ worth of damage is caused by feral hogs on an annual basis.
Aside from the damage they cause, wild pigs also carry numerous diseases – some of which can affect humans. For example, feral hogs have been known to carry Brucellosis, Tuberculosis and even Hog Cholera.
Wild hogs also directly compete with native species and livestock, making them even more troublesome to deal with. Over the years, efforts to control wild hogs have struggled to keep their numbers under control. Just recently the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the use of a new tool to help control wild hog populations – the use of drones to help track movements of herds.
