Today is the Autumnal Equinox
Today is the Autumnal Equinox! What is the Autumnal Equinox, you ask? Well, it is the one day a year where there are EQUAL amounts of daylight and dark hours! The term equinox is actually derived from latin, with aequus meaning equal, and nox, meaning night! It also means, that, starting tomorrow, the days will start to get a little shorter, and we will start out way back to the end of daylight savings, which, this year, happens on Sunday, November 7th.
There are actually a few traditions associated with the autumnal equinox. Pick something, like a flower, or a piece of fruit or a vegetable, it signifies the end of the growing season. Take a tip from the trees, and “shed what you don’t need”…. clean out your warmer weather clothes and donate those that you don’t wear or need to a charitable organization.
Stock up on what you do need. Take inventory of things that you might need should we (hopefully NOT) experience another winter storm. Do you have plenty of fresh batteries, candles, non-perishable items? For example, canned goods, bottled water, etc.?
Do a fall cleaning, to make sure all of those items that you might need in case of bad weather are in working order and you know where they are. Start that chainsaw, in case you need to cut limbs. Fire up the heaters, make sure you have enough firewood on hand.
