Today is National Heat Awareness Day

Today is National Heat Awareness DayToday is National Heat Awareness Day. Summer is here and that means that temperatures are on the rise. With us being near the gulf, that also means that humidity is going to be high as well. With that being said, it is important to be aware of the dangers of hotter temperatures and high humidity.

I have included some tips and tricks to help you stay safe during some of these summer heat waves. Heat waves can be extremely dangerous and can even lead to numerous health concerns if you are unaware of your surroundings. Some of the main symptoms to be on the look out for include dizziness, weakness, intense thirst and even headaches.

Some of the main tips include:

-Stay hydrated with cool water and electrolytes

-Stay inside or minimize how much time you spend outside during the hottest times of the day

-If you’re hot find a way to cool down with either a shower, cool treat or moving air

-Ensure your A/C units have been recently services (We  will definitely have the AC running at Arcola Feed!)

Keep your pets in mind too:

Animals do not like to drink hot water, especially horses. If you can move the water to a shady location that would be ideal! If that is not an option, offer an extra water supply out of the sun so it stays cool during the heat of the day. You might also add an electrolyte to their water or feed to encourage more water consumption. Don’t forget that your livestock needs to stay well hydrated during the heat, too!
To help keep your dogs cool during the summertime, get a kiddie pool for them to lay in. You will be surprised how much they love to go sit or lay in the cool water! It’s a small investment to help prevent heat exhaustion or worse.
