Presidents Day
On the 3rd Monday in February, we celebrate Presidents Day, also known as George Washington’s birthday. This is a federal holiday honoring all presidents of the United States. It was first created and celebrated as a federal holiday in 1879.
Presidents day has also been tied into celebrating Abraham Lincolns birthday, which falls on February 12th. As far as traditions go, cherry pies were traditionally eaten on Presidents Day. There is a legend stating George Washington chopped down a cherry tree in his youth. Previously, businesses used to be closed for Presidents Day, but now the majority are open. Many host multiple sales.
Interestingly enough, there are some communities that host celebrations for the special day. For example, Laredo, Texas hosts a monthlong tribune. There are many parades and small celebrations that occur. Although this day is normally spent with people at work and kids at school.
