Oyster Season in Texas
Oyster Season in Texas: Aside from the cooler weather, this time of year is also one of my favorites because you can once again eat raw oysters. As the old saying goes, you can only eat oysters in months that contain an “R.” This includes months from September all the way through to April.
One thing I’ve always wondered, was why this saying came to be? Luckily after doing a little research, I was able to figure out the source. The saying excludes the months of May, June, July, and August – the hot summer months. The main reason we do not eat wild oysters during these months come from it being their spawning months, even the public commercial season is restricted to November 1st to April 30th.
Oysters are an important part of our saltwater habitat. The Gulf Coast produces around 45% of the nation’s oysters. As a result, oyster fishing is very tightly regulated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife.
If we have a good season, hopefully there will be plenty of oysters to go around. One of my favorite places for oysters includes Gilhooley’s in San Leon! It may be a little bit of a drive, but it is so worth it.
