National Unicorn Day and Jay’s Birthday
National Unicorn Day! It also happens to be Jay’s birthday! If you stop by the store today, please be sure and tell him happy birthday! He is 54 years old today! A little history on Jay… he was born in Shiner, Texas… yep, where they make the beer!
His parents, Buford and Sharon, moved to the Houston area when he was a baby. He attended Quail Valley Junior High(now known as Quail Valley Middle School) and Dulles High School, graduating from there in 1985. He started working at the old Arcola Feed, located on Highway 6, while in high school. After graduation, he attended Alvin Community College for several semesters, while working at the store.
If you have been around long enough, you will remember the days when it was a one man show. Jay would write your order and go load your feed! When the former owners asked if he would like to buy the store, he borrowed money from his parents and grandparents and became a business owner at the early age of 21. He was able to pay the loans back, grow the business and in early 1995, Jay and Tara got married. Daughter Alex literally grew up in the feed store, coming to work with Tara for the first time at 4 days old. With the overpass coming and the widening of highway 6, the business moved to its current location in 2000.
