National Texas Day
National Texas Day: For anyone who loves their state, it comes as no surprise that we have a National Texas Day. Texas joined the union December 29th, 1845. To this day, it has been one of the leading states in the country. Texas is the 2nd largest state, in relation to land mass, failing just behind ginormous Alaska. It is also the 2nd most populated state with over 29 million residents. Houston being the most populated city in the state.
Texas is named after the Caddo word táyshaʼ which means ‘friends.’ Another come phase associated with our state, is “six flags over Texas,” this comes from the 6 different flags that have flown over the state. For example, Spain, Mexico, and even France.
There are many state symbols that are widely know and they are as follows:
- State Bird – Northern mockingbird
- The State Fish – Guadalupe bass
- State Flower – Bluebonnet
- The State Insect – Monarch butterfly
- State Mammal – Texas longhorn and nine-banded armadillo
- The State Reptile – Texas horned lizard
