National Scrabble Day

National Scrabble DayToday is National Scrabble Day! Unfortunately, it falls on a Wednesday, so I will not be playing Scrabble today with Momo. We usually play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We started playing canasta years ago, when she and grandma Wiese taught me how to play.

Sometime last year, I was cleaning out a closet and came across a Limited Edition Scrabble game that was given to me by my late grandmother, Lillian. I took it over to Momo’s and said “Let’s play this instead of canasta.” So began our not so friendly Scrabble days. You see, Momo fancies herself to be smarter than the rest of us. She is a sore loser. However, so am I, but that is beside the point.

For times sake, we play by a few of our own rules. For example, we play with 9 tiles instead of the standard 7. And if we make a 7 letter word, we get an extra 50 points. We also have a Scrabble dictionary, and the dictionary Lillian gave me, when she gave me that Scrabble game back in the mid 1980’s.

On my day’s off, we play anywhere from one to three games, depending upon how much barn work needs to be done, and what the weather is like. If the weather is crappy or I am caught up in the barn, we usually go for two or three. She used to beat me about 90% of the time. As time has gone on, I am winning pretty close to 50% of the time.
