National Poinsettia Day

National Poinsettia DayNational Poinsettia Day: When I think of Christmas, one of the first things that come to mind are Poinsettias.  Poinsettias are a native shrub from Mexico and Central America. The plant was first introduced to the United States in the early 1800’s. Originally, Poinsettias were used by the Aztecs as a medication for fever and for red dye. However, today they are most commonly associated with Christmas. It is estimated that over the holiday season more than 70 million plants are sold in the United States.

While they are a beautiful plant to have in your house during the holidays, care should always be taken when you have pets in your house. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, if Poinsettias are ingested, there are various ailments that can occur. Fore example, these include, mouth and stomach irritation, drooling and even vomiting. If you believe your pet has consumed poinsettias or any possible toxin, there are many numbers you can call. While I always recommend calling your pet’s veterinarian first, I understand that sometimes emergencies happen over weekend or on days that your veterinarian may not be open. If this happens there are many resources you can call, I have included some below,

Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661
