National Poinsettia Day
National Poinsettia Day: When I think of Christmas, one of the first things that come to mind are Poinsettias. It’s National Poinsettia Day!
Poinsettias are a native shrub from Mexico and Central America. The plant was first introduced to the United States in the early 1800’s. Originally, Aztecs used Poinsettias as a medication for fever and for red dye. However, today they are most commonly associated with Christmas. It is estimated that over the holiday season, over 70 million plants are sold in the United States.
They are a beautiful plant to have in your house during the holidays. Yet care should always be taken when you have pets in your house. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center various ailments can occur through ingestion. For example, mouth and stomach irritation, drooling and even vomiting.
If you believe your pet has consumed poinsettias or any possible toxin, there are many numbers you can call. While I always recommend calling your pet’s veterinarian first, I understand that sometimes emergencies happen over weekend or on days that your veterinarian may not be open. If this happens there are many resources you can call, I have included some below:
Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435
