National Bald Eagle Day

The bald eagle was selected as our national bird in 1782. It was officially adopted to be a part of our countries seal.

During the mid-20th century, we actually almost led this species of bird to extinction due to a variety of factors. For example,  one of the most contributing factors was the use of DDT pesticides. They thinned the eagle eggshells. Before DDT was banned in 1972, the eagle population plummeted from 300,000-500,000 to just 412 nesting pairs in the entire country. Bald eagles were also losing habitat at an unprecedented rate. They were shot both legally and illegally.

Thanks to the many efforts, the bald eagle was officially removed from the endangered species list in 1995. Today, bald eagles are a federally protected species. The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service federally protect nesting locations. Now there are over 300,000 bald eagles in the continental US. Fortunately. As a result, making their conservation program one of the most successful conservation and species recovery programs in the world to date.
