July 2022 Garden Tips
Check out these July 2022 garden tips! If you are growing parsley or dill in your garden, be on the lookout for Swallowtail caterpillars. They can be seen eating parsley and dill, along with a few other herbs.
The female butterflies can be seen fluttering around in your garden. They will ovipost (lay their eggs) which will turn into tiny caterpillars in a few days. These bright green, white and yellow caterpillars, turn into beautiful swallowtail caterpillars after going through several stages (called instar.) They then hang by a thread and become a chrysalis.
On average, in 6 to 10 days, they will then emerge as a beautiful butterfly, which once dry, will fly off and start the whole life cycle again.
Watching these guys grow and change is FASCINATING! Here in Texas, we have several species of swallowtail butterflies, but the black swallowtails are one of the most common in and around your garden.
