It is Bluebonnet Season!
Since it is the beginning of spring, that means it is BLUEBONNET SEASON!! Bluebonnets normally start to bloom in Texas in late March to early May. The Bluebonnet, specifically the Texas Bluebonnet or Texas Lupine is the state flower of Texas. This annual flower blooms every spring and can be seen up and down the highways, especially between Houston and Austin.
I always love driving this time of year and seeing all of the amazing wildflowers bloom this time of year. During this time of year TxDOT doesn’t mow along state highways. This hopefully ensures we continue to have huge blankets of bluebonnets for years to come. Interestingly enough, they also use a herbicide that is specifically designed to not harm any of the wildflowers growing. It’s meant to only kill weeds.
TxDOT purchases and plants bluebonnet seeds every year to help ensure the Highway Beautification Act, which was passed in 1965 thanks to Lady Bird Johnson. One of the many goals of this act was to help improve appearances of the national highway system, which also includes Texas roads.
