Hatching Emu Chicks
Our emu chicks started hatching a few weeks ago! They are the cutest chicks!
They are very inactive for the first day or two after hatching. The emu chicks pretty much just lay around absorbing their yolk sack. It generally takes them two days to figure out how to unfold themselves and stand up and get moving.
Our chicks are started out on gro-gel, which is a wonderful electrolyte supplement we sell here at Arcola Feed. It is a powder form that turns into a bright green gel when water is added to it. It’s their sole source of nutrients for the first 24 to 48 hours. Above all, it gets them off to a great start! Gro-gel works great for all poultry, from quail to our big emus!
If you would like to see one next time you are in the store, just ask, we would be glad to let you see one if they are still here. They are kept in the office until they are 4 or 5 days old, then they are moved to our house and a bigger area so they can move around.
