Happy Boxing Day

Happy Boxing Day! Hands holding a pink boxHappy Boxing Day to all my Canadian Friends! No, not boxing as in George Foreman…but, boxing as in boxing a gift. In Canada, it is a Federal Holiday, so no banking or postal services. It is, however a HUGE shopping holiday! Many stores offer deep discounts. Similar to what we do here on Black Friday (only it is after Christmas.)

However, in some areas of Canada, stores are actually prohibited from opening on boxing day, so these sales are moved to the 27th or the 28th, with many stores now running their sales for several days before and after and calling it “Boxing Week”.

The origins of boxing day are not known precisely. However, it is believed that it originates from the late Roman/early Christian era when many churches had an alms box used to collect special offerings for the poor.
