Fort Bend County Steer Show tips: photo is of a steer in a face and neck wrap titled"Black Heat Show Cattle Sweats" There are flames in the background. We are exactly 11 weeks out from the Fort Bend County Steer Show! How is your steer looking? You still have time to make some dietary changes to push, hold or pull off weight.

If he is looking a little heavy in his neck, it’s time to put on a sweat collar. Sweating will help reduce thickness in the throat, jaw, neck and crest. It’s also great for heifers that are starting to get a little too heavy.

It is time to really get a hold of your steers weight gain. Steers MUST weight AT LEAST 1,000 pounds at check-in. If your steer weighs 850 pounds now, he needs to gain 175 pounds between now and fair. You should be taking in an extra 25 pounds for shrinkage. That is a 2.27/lb/day weight gain.

If your steer has been gaining an average of 2.5 to 3 pounds a day, you are on target for minimum weight. If he has only been gaining 2 pounds/day, and weighs 850 now, you need to PUSH to make sure he weighs more than the minimum BEFORE he goes on the trailer.
