February Gardening Tips: Freeze Damage in Your Plants

February Gardening Tips: Freeze Damage in Your PlantsFebruary Gardening Tips: Freeze Damage in Your Plants.

One of the hardest parts about winter is dealing with the aftermath of the multiple freezes, this includes looking at some of the less than attractive plants with freeze damage. It can be tempting to prune of dead or dying portions of plants, but according to the Texas A&M AgriLife, this should be avoided.

Even though we had the hard freeze, we can still expect about another month of potential freezes and frost. Dr.Michael Arnold states, “There is a tendency to spruce things up, but if we do that too quickly, we can predispose the plants to more freeze damage”. There are two ways that pruning can further damage plants, first it removes a layer of dead plant that can actually help insulate it when another frost/freeze arrives. Secondly, pruning can promote new growth that can further damage a plant if another frost comes through.
