There are so many vegetables that can be planted during the month of September. The Houston area is in Region III. So, a good amount of your fall garden can be planted during this month. According to the AgriLife Extension table, starting September 1st you can plant Snape Beans, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumber, and even potato. 

Halfway through the month, you can also add Kohlrabi and summer Squash. One of the best suggestions that I can offer, is to focus on the varieties you choose to plant.
