Don’t forget, Saturday is chick day at Arcola Feed! We will have lots of chicks, and they will be BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE!   Just remember your FREE chicks are ALWAYS straight runs! We will have Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and Cornish Rocks, as well as a mixture of “hatchery choice” brown egg layers, which means they send what hatches that day, could be  some awesome breeds like Maran, Delawares, Buckeye’s, Sussex and more! It’s always exciting to see what we get! If you haven’t started your own flock, NOW IS THE TIME!

Just remember, these are only a few days old, so they will need supplemental heat! We have that covered here in the way of heat lamps and bulbs. Chicks do best in a well ventilated area, free of drafts and big temperature fluctuations. I start mine in the house in a BIG rubbermaid tub. I put them on shavings, and hang my heat lamp off to one side. Be sure and secure your heat lamp, and monitor the temperature. Too cold and it does NO good, too hot and you will bake your chicks! If they huddle under the light, they are too cold, if they are up against the side of their enclosure, far away from the heat source, they are too hot.
