Challenges for Texas Dairies

Challenges for Texas DairiesChallenges for Texas Dairies:  So much of the agricultural world has been impacted by increased feed and production cost. That also, of course, includes Texas Dairies. Milk prices are good for producers and demand is high. However, many producers are still facing huge increases in production costs. USDA reports that Texas dairies are producing about 6% more milk than last year, with a total of about 16 billion pounds of Texas milk.

Drought and high fertilizer cost continue to increase forage, grain and feed production cost, which are vital for dairy producers. Aside from that, increases in fuel cost and labor shortages, also presented producers with a particularly challenging situation.

With Texas being the nation’s 4th largest producer of milk, there is hope that our state’s dairy production will continue to expand, even with the numerous setbacks from last year. New processing facilities are opening up across the state over the next two years, which will help keep Texas milk in Texas and help meet the growing demand for cheese in the Lone Star State.
