Celebrate Texas Independence Day!
Happy Ash Wednesday AND It’s Texas Independence Day, too! On March 2, 1836, Texas adopted The Texas Declaration of Independence and declared itself free from the rule of Mexico. The Republic of Texas was annexed into the United States 9 years later. The Lone Star Flag was adopted on January 24, 1839.
It is also Sam Houston’s birthday! Houston played an important role in the Texas Revolution.
Ash Wednesday is the day you receive the mark of the cross on your forehead symbolizing both death and repentance in a solemn and humble way. The ashes are used as a symbol for sin. “From dust you came, and from dust you will return” is said by the priest or pastor to the person as they receive the ashes.
Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and ends 40 days later on Easter Sunday, with the resurrection of Christ. Traditionally, Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting, where no meals are consumed, or only a small meal.
