Battling the Heat
Welcome to the first day of summer!
It is already hot, but it is going to get EVEN HOTTER over the course of the next 90 days or so. Are your animals prepared for the heat? Do you have plenty of fresh, clean, cool water available at all times for your pets and livestock? Check your water around 11 am, 2 pm, and 5 pm, if it is in the sun during any of these times, it is going to be warm on a hot sunny day. Animals do not like to drink hot water, especially horses. If you can move the water to a shady location that would be ideal! If that is not an option, offer an extra water supply out of the sun so it stays cool during the heat of the day. You might also add an electrolyte to their water or feed to encourage more water consumption. Don’t forget that your livestock needs to stay well hydrated during the heat, too!
To help keep your dogs cool during the summertime, get a kiddie pool for them to lay in. You will be surprised how much they love to go sit or lay in the cool water! It’s a small investment to help prevent heat exhaustion or worse.
