August 2022 Gardening Tips
August 2022 Gardening Tips: Drought and how it can affect your garden. I’m sure we have all noticed the cracks in the ground getting wider and the grass getting just a little crunchier as we slowly make it through summer.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitoring website, about 96% of the state is experiencing at least some sort of drought. Fort Bend, Harris and Brazoria are included. With that being said, the majority of us with a garden or outside plants are probably having to water them more frequently.
The Importance of Watering:
I know I personally struggle to stay on top of watering my garden. This can sometimes lead to having problems with your vegetables. One easy to spot problem is in tomatoes. This is when you have a big and beautiful plant, full of flowers, but no fruit.
According to Texas A&M Agrilife, irregular watering can lead to tomato plants that look great but never truly produce tomatoes. Another common issue with tomatoes is when the edges of the leaves turn brown. This another problem that can be caused by irregular water, whether it is overwatering or underwatering.
Overall, I know it can be a challenge to keep up with watering your garden. Especially when it feels like 1,000 degrees outside! Texas A&M Agrilife is a great resource for any gardener or plant enthusiasts. If you would like more information please go to https://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/vegetable/guides/. Otherwise, I hope everyone continues to have a great summer, even if it is hot and dry.
