Arbequina Olive Tree

Arbequina Olive Tree Arbequina Olive Tree: #Howdoesyourgardengrow

Well, our garden isn’t growing anything right now, other than last year’s peppers (jalapeno, Anaheim, bell and poblano) and we still have parsley.  However, I’ve ventured out and purchased my very first olive tree!

I went to Caldwell Nursery (www.caldwellhort.com) in Rosenberg before Christmas to pick up a new Satsuma orange for my mother-in-law for Christmas as hers didn’t survive last years freeze. I have been wanting to plant olive trees and decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on a 5 gallon Arbequina variety.

This particular olive is one of the most cold resistant, and doesn’t need a pollinator, as it is self fertile.  I purposely chose a tree that already had about 15 olives on it, just in case I kill it, at least I had olives once….

If you like asparagus, now is the time to get your crowns in the ground.  Yes, you can start them from seeds, but it will be a minimum of 5 years before you are eating asparagus.   Crowns will start producing in about 3 years.

There are some awesome places online to get your crowns, simply search “asparagus crowns.” Don’t forget to get your successive plantings of root crops in the ground.
